AI-assisted, source-checked
Byron's 574 venues are read and drafted by AI from each venue's own published material, checked against that material before going live. The model structures what a venue says about itself; it doesn't form opinions and it isn't asked to remember anything.
What we do not do: we do not visit every venue, we do not have owner confirmation for listings unless a listing says so, and we do not present a compiled listing as a review. Where a listing has been checked in person or confirmed by the venue, it will say so with a date.
We don't invent facts
Facts need sources, and this readership checks. People here genuinely want to know whether produce is local, so a vague or unsourced claim doesn't survive long. Where we can't verify something, we leave it out rather than write something that sounds right.
Sourcing & attribution
Our information comes from a mix of sources, including:
- The venue's own website and menu, plus producer and market listings from the hinterland
- Google Places for location, hours and rating volume — never for the write-up
- Ticketing platforms for events: Ticketmaster, Eventbrite, Moshtix, Meetup and AllEvents
- Reader corrections, often from locals correcting something a visitor-facing guide got wrong
Where images or facts come from a third party, we attribute them where appropriate and link out so you can check the original.
The Spot Score, in plain language
Byron's ratings swing with the season more than with the cooking. The same venue reads as relaxed in June and overwhelmed in January, and the reviews say so. There's also a persistent gap between what the town is famous for and where people actually eat well, much of which is in Bangalow and Mullumbimby. The Spot Score compares venues to their own category and area, weights current information heavily given how much changes between seasons, and never accounts for money.
Freshness & verification
Venues change constantly, so freshness is built into our process and into the Spot Score itself — older, unverified information counts for less. We re-check listings over time and update them as sources change. Even so, please treat time-sensitive details like hours and menus as a guide and confirm with the venue before you go.
How to report an inaccuracy
Found something wrong, out of date or a venue that's closed? Please tell us via our contact form and we'll review and fix it quickly. Spotting errors helps everyone, and we're grateful for it.
What this looked like for Byron Bay
Byron swings harder between quiet and overwhelmed than anywhere else we cover, and the reviews swing with it. The same venue reads as relaxed in June and chaotic in January. We weight recent, verified information heavily here because a description written in one season can be actively misleading in the other.
There's also a persistent gap between what the town is known for and where people actually eat well. A lot of that is in Bangalow, Federal and Mullumbimby, which most visitor-facing guides skip entirely. Covering the hinterland properly was the main thing that made this guide worth having.
This readership checks claims. People here genuinely want to know whether produce is local and whether a kitchen means what it says, so vague descriptions don't survive contact with readers. Several of our corrections have come from locals fixing something a visitor guide got wrong.
