Byron Bay Recreational Grounds, also known as the Rec Grounds, is a broad community green space in the centre of Byron Bay. It is used for family outings, organised weekly sport and the Byron Bay Rugby 7s event, giving the grounds a lively role in local sporting life as well as everyday recreation.
The facilities are substantial. The grounds include two full-size soccer fields, a cricket field with four practice nets, a rugby field, three netball courts, a basketball court, a croquet court and four tennis courts managed by Byron Bay Tennis. The main sporting fields are supported by lighting, a clubhouse, canteen, change rooms, storage areas and public toilets. Sports fields can be booked online, making the venue suitable for organised training, matches and club activities.
Families have a reason to visit beyond the playing fields, with a children’s playground completed in 2022 beside the Scout Hall. The grounds also include shade areas, drinking fountains, toilets and parking. The western edge of the fields is regularly used by personal trainers, while the Scout Hall and Byron Community Cabin host art classes and other community activities, adding a broader community dimension to the site.
The Rec Grounds are closely connected with local clubs, including Byron Bay Football Club, Byron Bay Cricket Club, Byron Shire Rebels rugby, Byron Bay Netball Club and Byron Bay Tennis. That mix of sporting and community use makes the space well suited to families, players, spectators, training groups and anyone looking for an open green setting in Byron Bay. It is more of a practical, active public facility than a quiet ornamental park, with the variety of courts, fields and community spaces giving it a strong local focus.
Spot Score
The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.1 from 33 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
