Evans Head Living Museum

Evans Head Living Museum explores the history and development of Evans Head, Woodburn, Broadwater and Coraki through a volunteer-run, not-for-profit collection. Its work covers both human and natural history, with displays and research shaped by local knowledge and community involvement.

The museum’s seven main themes include World War II, Aboriginal history and culture, the natural environment, agriculture, sport, fishing and prawning, and mining. Its military focus includes the State Heritage-listed Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome and the Official War Graves Cemetery. Other subjects range from sugar cane and honey production to professional sculling, waterskiing, surfing, gold mining and mineral sands, as well as the fishing industry’s links with the Sydney Fish Markets and prawning research.

There is also substantial material for people investigating local family history, including research files and photographs relating to district families and military personnel who served at Evans Head. The museum holds regular exhibitions and reunions, with particular attention to the First and Second World Wars and fishing and prawning. Its Aboriginal history material addresses the cultural significance of the Evans Head area to the Bandjalang People and wider Bundjalung Nation, including places such as Dirawong Reserve, Goanna Headland and the Iron Gates.
