Why it's worth checking out
Frida’s Field is a 120-acre regenerative farm, restaurant and event venue in Ewingsdale, in the Byron Bay Hinterland. The restaurant offers one set-menu lunch sitting each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with bookings essential. Lunch is designed as a relaxed, extended experience, with guests encouraged to take in the pastoral views and enjoy a stroll around the fields. The signature format includes a farm tasting plate, two starters, a main served with three sides and dessert, with a choice between omnivore and vegetarian menus. Dietary requirements can be accommodated when noted in advance, and there is also a kids menu for families.
The cooking is led by multi-award-winning chef Alastair Waddell, whose produce-driven menus change every six weeks to reflect what is being harvested from the farm and sourced from Northern Rivers growers. The kitchen works with the property’s market garden, food forest orchard and paddocks, while also using produce from selected regional producers. Techniques such as fermenting, bottling, wood-firing and smoking feature in the kitchen’s approach, and the beverage list focuses on small-batch wines, beers and spirits, including cocktails made with seasonal syrups prepared in-house. Guests can choose beverage pairings or order from the broader list.
The restaurant occupies an architect-designed barn with an open-plan layout, polished concrete floors, exposed timber roof trusses and a large recycled-brick fireplace used for wood-fired cooking. A covered verandah opens onto a lawn terrace overlooking the fields and orchard-lined hills, giving the space a rural setting without losing its considered, refined feel. The venue is wheelchair accessible, with ample parking and a bus turning circle. It can host bookings of up to 40 people online, while larger groups can enquire directly.
Frida’s Field is family-run by Edward Rawlings and Jeanie Wylie, who live on the property with their children. Their regenerative farming work includes rotational grazing for a small Angus-Wagyu herd, organic gardening, a food forest orchard, solar power and rainforest regeneration projects with Landcare and Big Scrub Regeneration. That connection between farm and kitchen is central to the experience. It suits a long lunch with friends, a family outing or a considered group gathering, and the private property is also available for weddings and exclusive events. The venue is about 10 minutes from Bangalow and 25 minutes from central Byron Bay.
