Why it's worth checking out

Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk is a four-day, 42-kilometre bushwalking route through the Tweed Byron Hinterland, linking Mount Jerusalem and Nightcap national parks with Whian Whian State Conservation Area. The one-way trail begins at Manns Road trackhead car park and finishes at Minyon Falls lookout, making it a point-to-point walk rather than a casual loop. From Bangalow or Byron Bay, it offers a substantial rainforest adventure close to the Northern Rivers, with three walk-in campgrounds along the route and a Grade 4 rating for people with bushwalking experience.

The landscape is the main attraction. The track follows the southern rim of the ancient Tweed Caldera, crossing country shaped by volcanic activity and erosion over millions of years. Walkers move through subtropical and warm-temperate rainforest, wet and dry sclerophyll forest and tea-tree scrub, with sections around Whiskey Creek and Unicorn Falls adding creek crossings and water views. The route ends at Minyon Falls, where water drops more than 100 metres over cliffs formed by the ancient Tweed Volcano. In the surrounding forests, the website highlights rare and threatened species including the nightcap oak, Fleay’s barred frog, pouched frog, spotted-tailed quoll, koala, wompoo fruit-dove and Albert’s lyrebird. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but the biodiversity gives the walk a strong sense of place.

Gidjuum Gulganyi means “Old People’s Track” in the language of the Aboriginal Peoples who have travelled these ridges and valleys for thousands of years. The route passes through the traditional lands of the Widjabul Wia-bal and Minjungbal People of the Bundjalung Nation, whose continuing connection to Country, culture and spiritual traditions is acknowledged by NSW National Parks. That cultural context is an important part of understanding the walk: it is not simply a scenic route, but a journey through a living and storied landscape.

The self-guided experience involves carrying your tent and equipment, although optional transfers are available. For a supported version, Vision Walks offers a guided hike with environmental scientists and local Aboriginal guides, while Connect Adventures provides pack-free and full-pack guided options. These tours include different levels of equipment, meals and support, as outlined by each operator. Visitors wanting a shorter outing can explore sections such as Byan Yangala loop, Whiskey Creek, Minyon Falls or Unicorn Falls walking tracks, while the Historic Nightcap walking track and other shorter routes provide alternatives across the connected parklands. The full walk is best suited to prepared adults, experienced bushwalkers and small groups comfortable with camping; the shorter Grade 3 sections are more approachable for a day outdoors, including families choosing a suitable route. Check alerts and closures before leaving, carry a map, follow the markers in the north-to-south direction and note that campfires are prohibited at the campgrounds.
