Minyon Falls walking track

Minyon Falls walking track is a rainforest walk in Nightcap National Park, offering a scenic route to one of the northern NSW park’s best-known waterfalls. Popular with visitors to the Byron Bay area, the 13km return track takes an estimated three to four hours and is graded Grade 3, making it best suited to bushwalking fans who are comfortable with a longer, more demanding outing. The walk can be started from either of the picnic areas at Minyon Falls.

The track winds through dense rainforest, across pristine creeks and along the Nightcap escarpment. A notable section passes an old-growth stand of brushbox trees on the western side of Repentance Creek, while fern-lined creeks provide quieter places to pause. Minyon Grass picnic area offers tables and views towards the cascading falls and surrounding forest, and is described as a lower-key alternative to the more popular Minyon Falls lookout. The lookout itself provides views of the waterfall and rainforest, with parking and picnic areas for a simpler day visit.

There is also a broader network to explore: the track links with Boggy Creek walk, which continues north towards Rummery Park campground in the neighbouring Whian Whian State Conservation Area. The nearby Boggy Creek route follows blackbutt forest and the creek to Minyon Falls, with swimming possible in pools along the creek. These connected walks make the area appealing to visitors wanting more than a short viewpoint stop, while the picnic areas suit those looking to include a meal break among the forest scenery.

Preparation matters here. The walk is in a remote location, conditions can change with the weather, and public access is not permitted within 100m of the top of Minyon Falls. Visitors should bring drinking water, a hat, sunscreen, sturdy shoes and suitable clothing, and let a family member or friend know their plans. Nightcap National Park may close because of poor weather, fire danger or management operations, so check current alerts and visitor information before setting out from Bangalow or the wider Byron Bay area.
