North Head walking track

North Head walking track is a short, easy outing through Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve, listed in the venue facts as Mullumbimby, Byron Bay. The 0.7-kilometre return route takes around 15 to 30 minutes and leads from the North Head car park through a section of endangered littoral rainforest to the mouth of the Brunswick River.

The walk combines changing scenery with views towards the coast and river. Along the way, visitors may spot wildlife including goannas, carpet pythons and a range of birds. Rainbow bee-eaters are one of the highlights for birdwatchers, particularly during the warmer months, so binoculars are worth bringing if you are hoping to watch birds or whales. The track also offers opportunities for picnicking, sightseeing and taking in the surrounding landscape.

With a Grade 2 classification and an easy walking route, it suits a brief solo wander, a relaxed outing with friends or anyone looking for a gentle nature break rather than a demanding hike. Two additional short tracks leave the North Head car park, leading towards the ocean beach and mangrove-lined Marshalls Creek, giving visitors options to extend their visit. Bring drinking water, a hat and sunscreen, and check current alerts before setting out, as the reserve may close in poor weather or during periods of fire danger.
