Northern Rivers Community Gallery

Northern Rivers Community Gallery (NRCG) is a regional arts hub in Ballina, presenting exhibitions, public programs and creative opportunities for the Northern Rivers community. Established by Ballina Shire Council in 2007, the gallery occupies the historic former Ballina Municipal Council Chambers, a 1927 building renovated with specialist lighting, climate control and security. It has four exhibition spaces and a programme that brings together professional, multi-arts and cultural projects.

The exhibition programme includes work by local, regional and national artists, alongside touring exhibitions and in-house curated projects. NRCG also supports emerging and established artists to exhibit and sell their work through subsidised arrangements, helping make the gallery a useful point of connection between artists, makers and audiences. Its 2025 programme included Col Mac’s passing place, which explored Ballina’s cultural and family histories; Emily Imeson’s Worlds Within Worlds; Peter McLean’s travelling portrait exhibition Distant Friends; and the immersive installation Den Inception by Immortal Soil. The gallery also hosted graduate awards from Southern Cross University and Byron School of Art.

NRCG’s creative offer extends beyond the main gallery. The adjacent Ignite Studios occupies the heritage-listed former Ballina Fire Station and provides studios, residencies, project space and event facilities. Its public programme includes workshops, artist talks, in-conversation events, community projects and professional development opportunities. The site is also developing a community ceramics studio with kiln-firing services. In 2025, Ignite Studios delivered or supported 54 public programmes, workshops, talks, events and workshop-space hires, with activities including film-making programmes for young people and NAIDOC Week projects developed with First Nations artists and groups.

This is a suitable stop for visitors wanting more than a quick look at framed works: solo visitors can take their time with changing exhibitions, while groups and creatively minded families may find the public programmes and workshops more engaging. The gallery’s focus on access, equity and participation makes it relevant to both regular arts audiences and people exploring the region’s creative life for the first time. The Ballina Gallery Cafe is located next door in the same building, providing a nearby option to combine an exhibition visit with a break.
