Why it's worth checking out

The Banya is an adults-only bathhouse, spa and dining venue in the heart of Mullumbimby, housed within the sun-baked bricks of a 1920s bank. Its central offering is a 90-minute bathhouse session, with a marble-tiled lap pool, two hot mineral pools, a wood-fired sauna, steam room and cold plunge. There are also shared areas where guests can slow down between soaks, plus a rooftop sundeck for relaxing after a treatment.

Massage is available in five treatment rooms, with three styles listed: Relaxation, Deep Tissue and Pregnancy. The venue’s approach is designed for time spent rather than a quick appointment, combining bathing, treatment, food and drinks in one visit. Guests are encouraged to stay for lunch or a drink, with the on-site bar and dining area offering small share plates, nutritious staples, wine, cocktails and health elixirs. The bathhouse dining spaces are reserved for guests using the facilities, while the café and front bar also welcome visitors for breakfast and all-day dining.

The Banya’s story is tied closely to its building and local ownership. Owner and local hotelier Brenden Lawless developed the venue as a contemporary take on the European banya tradition, where bathing is a social ritual alongside eating, drinking and connecting. That idea makes the space well suited to adults planning a catch-up, couples’ outing, group experience or a solo reset. Private experiences can also be arranged with combinations such as soaks, massages, food, day beds and a reserved area. A chauffeur service is available for transfers, with complimentary transfers offered for qualifying group bookings.

For something more structured, selected 9am Tuesday to Thursday bathhouse sessions include movement and breath experiences: Move & Dip combines yoga with hot and cold immersion, Breathe & Bathe pairs guided breathwork with the bathhouse, and Sculpt & Soak brings Pilates before a soak and steam. The venue is open every day except Christmas Day, with bathhouse sessions running from morning through evening; bookings are made online. It is an 18+ sanctuary, so it is not suitable for children or family outings. Towels are supplied, and the venue recommends arriving at least 15 minutes early. Wheelchair access is available at entry, with handrails at the cold plunge and hot pools.

The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.3 from 635 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
