Why it's worth checking out

The Big Prawn is one of Australia’s best-known Big Things and a distinctive landmark on the main road into Ballina. Standing nine metres high and weighing 35 tonnes, the giant crustacean is hard to miss in West Ballina and has become closely tied to the town’s identity.

The prawn was built in 1989 and faced an uncertain future two decades later, when its condition prompted local debate about whether it should be removed. Bunnings, which is next door, helped save it. After a $400,000 makeover, the refreshed landmark was unveiled in 2013, complete with a tail for the first time.

A visit is simple and largely about seeing the structure up close and taking a photo, making it an easy stop for families, groups and travellers passing through Ballina. It also suits anyone interested in Australia’s roadside attractions and local stories. If the seafood theme sparks an appetite, the website notes that places selling fresh catches can be found across the road.

Spot Score

The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.3 from 1,066 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
