Why it's worth checking out

Brunswick Valley Historical Society Inc Museum and Park is the physical home of a community organisation dedicated to collecting, conserving, publishing and interpreting the social, economic and civic history of the Brunswick Valley. Located in Summers Park in Mullumbimby, the museum occupies the former Mullumbimby Post Office, giving the site a direct connection to the town’s development and to the Society’s own beginnings.

The collection extends beyond the museum building. The park includes a machinery shed, a replica slab hut, horse-drawn farm implements, and equipment connected with the local railway, water supply and brickworks. Inside, visitors can explore material relating to the region, including objects, images and documents. The Society’s photo collection is available for viewing, with copies available for purchase, and the museum also facilitates family and local history research.

The Society’s work is strongly community-based. It was formed in 1982, adopted its current name in 1983, and officially opened the Mullumbimby Museum in 1988 after securing the former post office site. Its displays and research resources reflect the organisation’s aim to educate and engage the community with local history. Online features also cover subjects such as Mullumbimby’s former picture theatres, including the School of Arts and the Empire, as well as the railway’s history.

This is a useful stop for visitors interested in Mullumbimby, the Brunswick Valley and the wider Byron Shire, as well as for locals researching family or community history. Families, school groups and community groups are welcome by appointment, while solo visitors can browse the collection at their own pace. The museum is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10am to noon, except on public holidays. On the third Saturday of each month, the park hosts the Mullumbimby Community Market, with the market operating from 8am to 2pm and the museum site listed as open from 9am to 1pm. New members and volunteers are also welcome to take part in the Society’s ongoing work.
