Mullumbimby Museum

Mullumbimby Museum is the home of the Brunswick Valley Historical Society, which collects, conserves, publishes and displays material about the social, economic and civic history of the region. Its collection includes objects, photographs and documents, offering a grounded way to explore how the Brunswick Valley developed and how local communities lived and worked. The Society also provides facilities for family and local-history research, with its photo collection available for viewing and copies available to purchase.

The museum’s setting extends beyond the main building. Housed in the former Mullumbimby Post Office, it sits in Summers Park alongside a machinery shed, a replica slab hut and a collection of horse-drawn farm implements. The grounds also include equipment connected with the local railway, water supply and brick works. Together, these features give the museum a broad regional focus, linking everyday life, industry, transport and civic history rather than concentrating on a single theme.

The museum’s story is closely tied to the local historical society. The organisation was formed in 1982 and adopted its current name the following year. After the Society became involved in securing the former post office, the building was officially opened as the Mullumbimby Museum in 1988. The Society continues to publish material relevant to the area, welcome new members and involve the community through newsletters, research support and volunteer opportunities. Its website also highlights local subjects such as Mullumbimby’s former picture theatres, The School of Arts and The Empire, neither of which remains standing.

This is a useful stop for visitors interested in Mullumbimby and the wider Byron Shire region, as well as locals researching family connections or community history. School and community groups are welcome by appointment, while the regular Tuesday and Friday morning opening sessions provide opportunities for individual visitors. The museum is also associated with the Mullumbimby Community Market, held in Summers Park on the third Saturday of each month. At 17 Myokum Street, it offers a focused, locally maintained collection with plenty of scope for curious visitors to look more closely at the people, places and industries that shaped the Brunswick Valley.
