Why it's worth checking out

North Byron Hotel is a garden-set pub in Ewingsdale, just outside the Byron Bay town centre. The venue is designed as a place to eat, drink and settle in, with intimate indoor dining, a sunlit deck and lawns furnished with rugs and oversized cushions. Lush greenery, flowering gardens and coastal-style interiors give the venue a more spacious, relaxed feel than a traditional pub, while the outdoor areas provide plenty of room for a casual afternoon or evening under the fairy lights.

Food is central to the experience, with a seasonally changing menu that ranges from snacks and share plates to main meals and desserts. The kitchen focuses on local produce and says more than 90 per cent of its fruit, vegetables and meat is sourced within 350 kilometres of Byron Bay. Named menu offerings include fries with aioli, local calamari, buttermilk fried chicken, market fish of the day, burgers and chicken parmigiana. The venue also promotes seafood, meat and produce from local, sustainable producers, so the menu is intended to reflect the Northern Rivers region rather than follow a fixed pub formula.

The drinks list covers craft beers, spirits and wines, with 32 beer taps and cocktails built around seasonal Byron Bay flavours. Brookies Gin and Stone & Wood are among the local names highlighted by the hotel. There is also an on-site liquor merchants bottle shop offering handcrafted beers, spirits and wines, with drive-through service, local delivery and event catering noted on the website. Regular programming and specials listed by the venue include trivia, happy hour and pub lunch events, giving locals and visitors reasons to return beyond a standard meal.

The hotel has a substantial local history. Its site was cleared for dairying and small-scale cropping in the 1960s, later becoming a caravan park and beach resort. A nine-hole golf course operated there for about 30 years, and the former Sun Bistro eventually reopened to the public as North Byron Hotel in December 2021. Today, it suits couples looking for a more intimate meal, families and friends wanting outdoor space, and groups planning a function. Its community focus and emphasis on local suppliers also extend to sustainability and recognition of the Bundjalung of Byron Bay Arakwal, Minjungbal and Widjabul peoples as Traditional Owners and custodians of parts of the Byron Shire.
