Protesters Falls walking track

Protesters Falls walking track is a short rainforest walk in Nightcap National Park, listed for visitors in Bangalow, Byron Bay. The 1.4-kilometre return route leads through World Heritage-listed rainforest to a cascading waterfall, making it a worthwhile North Coast hinterland outing rather than a long or demanding hike. The suggested walking time is one to one and a half hours, and the track is graded Grade 3.

Elevated boardwalk sections make much of the route straightforward to follow, with the surrounding forest providing plenty to notice along the way. Bangalow palms and native tamarind grow beneath taller rainforest trees, including yellow carabeen and strangler figs. Visitors may hear rose-crowned fruit doves or barred cuckoo-shrikes, while pademelons can sometimes be seen moving through the bush. Binoculars are worth bringing for birdwatching, and the walk is specifically described as suitable for families and nature lovers.

The waterfall is only part of the experience. The track is named for the Terania Creek protests of the late 1970s, which helped save this rainforest. Sculptural features at the beginning of the walk explain that conservation history, giving the visit a stronger sense of place and showing how community action influenced the protection of the area. The forest also provides habitat for threatened frogs, including Fleay’s barred frog and the pouched frog. To help protect them, visitors are asked to stay out of the gravel creek beds.
