Why it's worth checking out

The Space Cowboy Gallery in Byron Bay presents bold one-of-one paintings and limited-edition prints by Australian artist Chayne Hultgren, known professionally as The Space Cowboy. The work is built around colour, humour and character, with many paintings featuring animals given distinctive personalities. Original artworks are released only once, so availability changes as pieces move into private collections. The gallery also offers limited-edition prints, including framed canvas and paper formats.

A defining feature is the hidden augmented-reality element incorporated into every Space Cowboy artwork. For original paintings and framed canvas prints, visitors can tap a phone against the artist’s signature to open an animation through a concealed NFC tag. Paper prints use a small QR code beside the signature, while the Artivive app can be used to explore animations across the collection. It adds an interactive layer to the paintings without taking away from their physical detail, making the gallery relevant to visitors who enjoy art that rewards a closer look.

Current original works listed by the gallery include Born to be wild - Green couch, Born to be wild - Gold cane, Never too late - Royal, Tie Grr Luxe VIII, Be bold be true be unstoppable, Never too late - Portrait gold leaf, Life is good II and Savage but first coffee II. The website also records sold-out editions and collected originals, with enquiries available for similar work. Each original comes hand-signed with a certificate of authenticity and is carefully packed for worldwide delivery. Prices are provided on request rather than displayed publicly.

The artist’s background gives the gallery a story beyond the paintings. Hultgren says he is based in Byron Bay and began painting almost every day during the COVID lockdown, after making art on the floor with his daughter. Before becoming a full-time visual artist, he performed internationally, touring more than 40 countries, appearing on television and setting 56 Guinness World Records. That history informs the movement, confidence and surprise in the work, which has since been shown at art fairs across Australia and New Zealand and received multiple People’s Choice awards. Private viewings can be arranged, making the gallery suitable for solo visitors, couples considering an artwork together, or small groups looking for an engaging contemporary art experience in Byron Bay.
