Tyagarah Nature Reserve protects 7km of coastline between Byron Bay and Brunswick Heads, offering a quieter stretch of beach within easy reach of Byron Bay township. The reserve pairs an unspoilt shoreline with coastal heath, creating a spacious natural setting that feels removed from the busier parts of the coast.
There is plenty to do at the water, including swimming, sunbathing, fishing and walking along the beach. Behind the dunes, bushwalking tracks provide a closer look at the reserve for self-reliant walkers, while the picnic area offers a simple place to pause, eat and relax. Families can build sandcastles and enjoy the beach, groups can settle in for a picnic, and solo visitors may prefer a quiet walk, swim or birdwatching session.
Spring brings the chance to look out for humpback whales and their calves passing along the coast during their migration. The reserve is always open, although closures may occur because of poor weather or fire danger, so checking current alerts before travelling is sensible. Park entry is $8 per vehicle per day, with payment available at the on-site machines. Tyagarah Beach is no longer a clothing-optional area, and nudity is not permitted.
Spot Score
The Spot Score is our composite of five signals — two about the venue's standing with visitors and three about how complete and current this listing is. It is not a visitor rating and not a verdict on the food or the experience. The 4.5 from 131 reviews is Google's visitor rating, shown separately and never altered by us.
