Mullumbimby Community Garden

Mullumbimby Community Garden is a 2.19-hectare community space on Stuart Street, open to the public seven days a week. You can join an activity, take a quiet wander through the gardens or simply spend time in the grounds. The site is used for family outings, picnics, birthday parties, dog walks and bicycle rides, with enough room and variety to suit a relaxed visit rather than a quick stop. Couples looking for an informal outdoor setting may also enjoy its peaceful atmosphere.

The garden’s work extends well beyond growing food. Its programs and projects cater for people of different ages and abilities, with activities shaped by the skills and interests of the volunteer community. The site supports learning around soil health, biodiversity, composting, traditional skills, crafts and practical sustainable living. Features mentioned by the garden include composting toilets and a solar-powered office, while workshops and other programs provide opportunities to learn by getting involved. There are also communal garden plots and allotments, and the Food for All program makes produce from shared organic plots available for a donation.

The project began after a public meeting in 2006, when local residents started developing a shared vision for a community garden. The current site was secured after negotiations with Byron Shire Council, and the garden’s opening and early development were driven by volunteers who contributed their time, skills and persistence. Today, Mullumbimby Community Garden is managed and maintained by volunteers, supported by membership fees, fundraising, donations and project grants. It operates under Mullum SEED, a local sustainability organisation that also supports other community groups.
